Sometimes a Mistake Pays Off

I never make mistakes
I have this big project going on at work. I am leading the technical work on a week long training course. That is the good news. The challenge is that we had less than two months to put it together. That is not a lot of time.
Last week we had the test teach of the new material that was developed. Here is the plan, we present the chapters leading up to and following the new content in order to see how it flows with the brand new stuff.
It’s 9:00 AM and time to start. I begin. After 30 minutes the first chapter ends and I dive into new content. All is well until a guy in the first row said, “my notes didn’t match what you were discussing.” Someone from the back chimed it, “Mine don’t match either.” Yep, Jeff had been bitten by Murphy’s Law.
It seems that I pulled a chapter from the course management system while the other developer had been working on a different chapter in our common work area. The other developer chimed in, “I was going to stop you but you were on a roll. In fact, I like what you did much better — let’s use it instead!”
So a test teach (aka rehearsal) allowed us to find our (really mine) mistake before the real show and then make the decision to change the course. Who says rehearsals are a waste of time?
Not me!
Finally Murphy worked FOR me!
